Yes, you can get married in Frederiksberg without Danish residence, but in English or German only on Thursdays at 11:00. Frederiksberg is a municipality of its own in the middle of Copenhagen, with its own town hall and its own rules; an approval for Copenhagen is not valid here.
Can you get married in Frederiksberg without Danish residence?
Yes. The municipality's English page refers every couple in which one partner is not Danish or Nordic and has no permanent right of residence in Denmark to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law. There you apply for the approval to marry (Danish: prøvelsesattest) and name Frederiksberg as the place of the wedding. Many couples do: according to its statistics, Familieretshuset issued 1,122 approvals for Frederiksberg in 2023, the fourth highest number after Copenhagen, Ærø and Tønder.
The detailed instructions on the municipality's Danish page are written for couples with a Danish address and MitID. What matters for you are mainly the wedding days, languages and witnesses. As of 03.11.2026, Familieretshuset usually decides complete applications within 5 working days; if it asks for more documents, it is currently working on cases from August 2026 in that queue. The fee of DKK 2,100 (about €281) is not refunded. Which documents you need is shown in our guide Documents for your wedding in Denmark.
On which days and in which language does Frederiksberg hold weddings?
Frederiksberg holds weddings on three days of the week, always at 11:00. According to the municipality's Danish page (as of 03.11.2026):
| Day | Time | Language |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | 11:00 | Danish, English or German |
| Friday | 11:00 | Danish |
| Saturday | 11:00 | Danish |
The municipality holds ceremonies in English on all three days if one of you lives in Denmark. Without Danish residence, Thursday is therefore the only day for a ceremony in English or German. There are no weddings on Sundays, on public holidays or during the summer holidays (weeks 28 to 30); the municipality lists a few further exceptions on its page. It also points out that individual days may already be taken: your preferred day is only booked once the wedding office confirms it in writing.
If you both understand Danish, Friday and Saturday are options too. Whether the municipality allows a Danish ceremony with an interpreter on those days is not stated; ask beforehand. The rule in Denmark is that you must both understand what is said during the ceremony. More in our guide Interpreters at the wedding.
Witnesses: two on weekdays, one on Saturdays
Every wedding in Denmark needs two witnesses. Frederiksberg provides both on weekdays, that is on Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays the municipality provides only one; you bring the second yourselves. For couples who do not speak Danish this means: on a Thursday you do not need witnesses of your own, but you may bring some. When other municipalities provide witnesses is compared in our guide Wedding witnesses in Denmark.
On the first Saturday of the month, according to the municipality, the mayor usually conducts the weddings personally; otherwise officials authorised by the mayor do so. Since Saturday ceremonies are in Danish, this mainly concerns couples who understand Danish. Which municipalities marry couples from abroad on Saturdays in English or German is shown in our guide Saturday or beach weddings in Denmark.
How much does a wedding in Frederiksberg cost?
Frederiksberg names no fee for the ceremony at the town hall. The municipality only says that applying with it is free of charge; that concerns couples who apply through a Danish municipality. This is in line with the situation since August 2025: back then, the City of Copenhagen concluded in its own legal review that there is no legal basis for charging fees for town hall weddings. Frederiksberg does not mention weddings at places other than the town hall on its page.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Familieretshuset fee (mandatory, not refundable) | DKK 2,100 (about €281) |
| Ceremony at the town hall | no fee stated |
| Two marriage certificates right after the ceremony | included |
| Extra marriage certificates | free, sent by post |
The international marriage certificate is issued in Danish, English, German, Spanish and French. You order extra copies from the wedding office by giving the date of the wedding, your names, your dates of birth and the number you need. How to use the certificate at home is explained in our guide on the international marriage certificate; all the costs of a wedding in Denmark are in our cost comparison 2026.
How it works for couples without Danish residence
- Name Frederiksberg as the place of the wedding. The approval is valid for exactly one municipality. If you name Copenhagen in your application, you cannot marry at Frederiksberg Town Hall unless Familieretshuset forwards the approval.
- Apply with complete documents. The approval is valid for four months from issue. Whether your case has any special features is shown by the free eligibility check.
- Settle the Thursday with the municipality. The wedding office is at the town hall, Smallegade 1, 1st floor, and can be reached Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 12:00 on +45 38 21 21 11. The municipality wants to know: preferred date and time, whether you bring your own witnesses, whether you exchange rings, and your phone numbers. Once it has your approval, it says you will get an answer within 14 days, with the exact time.
- The wedding day. The wedding hall is on the 1st floor of the town hall, to the left of the large mural on the balcony of the town hall's main hall; it was decorated by the painter Sikker Hansen. On Saturdays wheelchair users can use the ramp and lift at the main entrance. Right after the ceremony you receive two marriage certificates.
How a wedding in Denmark works step by step is explained in our guide The wedding ceremony in Denmark, step by step. In the Complete package we file the application with Frederiksberg as the place of the wedding and arrange the date with the municipality; the prices are on the prices page. We are often in contact with municipalities and ask them, but nobody can promise a particular Thursday.
Frederiksberg or Copenhagen?
From the outside, Frederiksberg looks like a district of Copenhagen. The municipality describes itself as an independent municipality in the middle of the capital, with 106,150 inhabitants on 8.7 square kilometres (as of 1 January 2026). For your wedding that means: two town halls, two municipalities, two sets of rules. According to the pages of both municipalities (as of 03.11.2026):
| Frederiksberg | Copenhagen | |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding days | Thu, Fri, Sat, always at 11:00 | Mon to Fri 9:10 to 15:50, Sat 10:00 to 12:40 |
| English or German without Danish residence | Thursdays only | on all wedding days |
| Witnesses provided by the municipality | two on weekdays, one on Saturdays | always two |
| Waiting time according to the municipality | not stated | up to four months |
If you need a day other than Thursday and want to marry in English or German, Copenhagen is the more likely option; there, however, the city states a waiting time of up to four months. More on our page Getting married in Copenhagen; the comparison with Tønder and Ærø is in our guide Copenhagen, Tønder or Ærø.
You can only switch between the two municipalities through Familieretshuset: only it can forward an approval that has been issued to another municipality, and that does not extend the four months of validity. What you can do if you have the approval but no date is explained in our guide Approved but no wedding date; we handle the switch as a change of municipality.
Getting there and a walk after the ceremony
The town hall is at Smallegade 1 in Frederiksberg. The nearest metro station is Frederiksberg, served by lines M1, M2 and M3. From Copenhagen Airport you take the M2 to Frederiksberg without changing, from Copenhagen Central Station (København H) the M3.
- From Germany by train: to Copenhagen Central Station, then on by metro.
- By car: via Jutland and the Great Belt bridge, or by ferry from Puttgarden to Rødby or from Rostock to Gedser.
- From Switzerland and Austria: fly to Copenhagen and continue on the M2.
Since the ceremony starts at 11:00, it is best to arrive the day before. After the ceremony, green spaces are close by: Frederiksberg Have and Søndermarken, which the municipality counts among its large green areas, and the Cisternerne beneath Søndermarken, a former water reservoir now used for art.
How to get a wedding date in Denmark and what rules other municipalities have is explained on our page How to get a wedding date in Denmark; waiting times are compared in the waiting times comparison 2026. Municipalities sometimes change wedding days and rules at short notice; what counts is what the municipality confirms.
