What couples often ask us.
Is the Danish process legally sound or some kind of loophole?
No, it is not a loophole. Familieretshuset decides under Danish marriage law and checks every couple against the same criteria. Denmark has simply kept the procedure lean and open to couples from abroad. For individual legal doubts you should consult a licensed lawyer in your country.
Is a Danish marriage legally recognised in Germany, Austria and Switzerland?
Yes. A marriage concluded in Denmark is recognised in all EU countries as well as in Switzerland. With our Apostille Service (add-on, €199.99) we can additionally obtain the apostille so the certificate is internationally valid.How recognition works, step by step
How long does the whole process take with you?
For most couples, three to six weeks from complete documents. Familieretshuset's official median across all applications is five to six weeks; fully prepared applications are often faster, because we check every document by hand before submission. Which documents do we need?
After our first call you'll receive a personal document list tailored to your situation. In most cases: passport or ID card, a civil status certificate (no older than four months) and a residence registration; depending on your case also a divorce decree, death certificate or relationship evidence. A certificate of no impediment is not required in Denmark.Full document overview
Do we both have to travel to Denmark?
Yes, both of you need to be present in person for the ceremony. Before that, application, documents and appointment coordination can be handled remotely.
