Nobody can influence how Familieretshuset handles applications or which dates the municipalities offer, so no one can guarantee a specific date. Ceremonies outside the town hall cost extra at the municipality, in Copenhagen DKK 2,732. There you bring two witnesses of your own, the ceremony is in Danish or English, and it takes place one month after the request at the earliest.

What couples often ask us.
Can we marry in Denmark if neither of us lives there?
Yes. Couples without Danish residence first apply online to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law, for the marriage eligibility review. With the approval you book your date with a municipality of your choice, for example Tønder, Aabenraa or Copenhagen.Check in 60 seconds whether it works for you
Is the Danish process legally sound or some kind of loophole?
No, it is not a loophole. Familieretshuset decides under Danish marriage law and checks every couple against the same criteria. Denmark has simply kept the procedure lean and open to couples from abroad. For individual legal doubts you should consult a licensed lawyer in your country.
Is a Danish marriage legally recognised in Germany, Austria and Switzerland?
Yes. In Germany and Austria the Danish marriage certificate does not even need an apostille, thanks to EU Regulation 2016/1191. In Switzerland you report the marriage via the Swiss representation (the Regional Consular Centre in Stockholm); its leaflet lists no apostille but asks for the original marriage certificate, stamped, signed and no older than six months. If you file directly with the cantonal supervisory authority, ask them beforehand whether they want an apostille. How long does the whole process take with you?
With complete documents usually three to six weeks to the wedding, depending on the municipality. Familieretshuset usually decides complete applications within 5 working days; after that, it depends on the next free date: Tønder holds ceremonies on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Ærø offers dates within 10 weeks, in Copenhagen you wait up to 4 months (as of October 2026).Current waiting times 2026
What does the ceremony itself cost?
There is no ceremony fee at the town hall: Tønder and Aabenraa say so explicitly, and Copenhagen has not charged one since August 2025. The only mandatory fee is Familieretshuset's, DKK 2,100 (2026, about €281), which is not refunded if you cancel. Which documents do we need?
After the free check we get in touch personally and send you a document list tailored to your situation. Usually that is your passport or ID card and, if you live together abroad, proof of residence; depending on your case also a divorce decree, death certificate, proof of legal stay, birth certificates of joint children or, on request, relationship evidence. Familieretshuset asks for a certificate of marital status only in individual cases, and a certificate of no impediment is not required in Denmark.Full document overview
Do we both have to travel to Denmark?
Yes, both of you need to be present in person for the ceremony. Before that, application, documents and appointment coordination can be handled remotely. Tønder and Aabenraa require no registration the day before, so there you can do it all in one day.Registry offices near the border compared
Do we need a visa for the wedding?
It depends on the passport. With an EU, EEA or Swiss passport, no. Everyone else must be lawfully in Denmark on the wedding day (Section 11 a of the Danish Marriage Act): visa-free, with a Schengen visa (a tourist visa is enough) or with a residence permit, depending on nationality. Do we need witnesses?
Yes, two. Many municipalities provide them free of charge, but not at all times: Tønder only in the morning (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30–12), Aabenraa Monday to Thursday, Copenhagen always. If you bring your own in Tønder, send their names and addresses at least one week ahead.Witnesses: the rules per municipality
Can the ceremony be held in German?
Yes, that is possible. According to their official pages, Tønder, Aabenraa, Haderslev, Kolding and Copenhagen also hold ceremonies in German, otherwise in English or Danish. If one of you understands none of these languages, you need an interpreter; for Arabic, Russian or Spanish we arrange one on request.Interpreters and ceremony language
What happens if documents are missing?
Then it gets slow: if Familieretshuset asks for more, the application moves to a separate queue. In mid-October 2026 that queue was working on applications from August, a delay of about 2 months. That is why we check every document before it is submitted.
How long is the approval valid?
Four months from the date of issue. Your wedding date must fall within this window, otherwise you need a new application with a new fee.
Do we get the marriage certificate straight away?
Yes. Right after the ceremony you receive international marriage certificates in several languages; in Tønder, for example, two copies in Danish, German, English, French and Spanish.
Can we marry on a Saturday or on the beach?
Yes, but not everywhere. Tønder and Aabenraa do not offer Saturday ceremonies to couples without Danish residence; on Saturdays you can marry, for example, in Copenhagen (10:00–12:40), Kolding (9–12, with your own witnesses) and on Fanø (every third Saturday of the month). Can we change our surname at the ceremony?
No, not without residence in Denmark. The certificate shows the names in your passports on the wedding day; you declare the name change afterwards at your registry office at home.Changing your name after the wedding
Can same-sex couples marry in Denmark?
Yes. Denmark has married same-sex couples since 2012, under the same rules as every other couple. Germany, Austria and Switzerland recognise the marriage; marriage equality has applied there since 2017, 2019 and 2022 respectively.
