Facts about marrying in Denmark.

Short and sourced. In depth in our guides.

  1. 1

Couples without residence in Denmark apply to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law, for the certificate of marital status (prøvelsesattest).

  2. 2

The Familieretshuset fee is DKK 2,100 in 2026 (about €281). It is not refunded, not even if the application is rejected.

  3. 3

Familieretshuset usually decides complete applications within 5 working days; if it asks for more documents, the case joins a queue.

  4. 4

The approval is valid for 4 months and issued for one municipality. Only Familieretshuset can forward it to another municipality.

  5. 5

Denmark does not require a certificate of no impediment from the home country; the couple declare their marital status themselves.

  6. 6

Anyone who is not an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen must be staying lawfully at the time of the wedding. Since 10.04.2026 the proof is the Entry/Exit System (EES) record.

  7. 7

The town hall ceremony takes 15 to 20 minutes and needs two witnesses.

    Guide: the ceremony

  8. 8

After the ceremony you receive the international marriage certificate. For Germany and Austria no apostille is needed thanks to Regulation (EU) 2016/1191.

  9. 9

An apostille on the Danish marriage certificate is issued by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the fee is DKK 250.

  10. 10

In the Danish national church a couple can only marry if one partner is a member.
