Visa and documents at a glance.
Documents means: a divorce decree or death certificate from an earlier marriage and birth certificates of joint children. Anyone who is single and has no children usually only needs the passport from their home country.

In short
What the entries mean.
- Apostille
- A stamp of authenticity from an authority in the country of origin. The document needs nothing more.
- Legalisation
- The country has no apostille: the document is certified in the country of origin and then confirmed by the Danish mission.
- Case-by-case review
- No Danish mission can legalise documents from this country. Familieretshuset decides case by case whether it accepts them.
- Translation
- Documents not in Danish, English or German also need a translation by an authorised translator, including the apostille.
What every couple needs with a partner from outside the EU.
- The passport with every page, including blank pages and the covers, in colour.
- Proof of legal stay: the residence permit of a Schengen state, front and back, or the visa, a printout of the EU short-stay calculator and the flight tickets.
- Dated photos and messages that show your relationship. Familieretshuset asks how long and where you have known each other.
- The power of attorney and truth declaration signed by both of you.
Questions about the country rules.
Does my partner need a certificate of no impediment from their country?
No. In Denmark, Familieretshuset checks the documents itself and issues the certificate. A certificate of no impediment from the home country is not needed.
What if my partner lives in Germany, Austria or Switzerland?
Then their residence permit, front and back, is enough as proof of legal stay, and they do not need a visa to travel to Denmark.
Where does the information come from?
The visa rules come from nyidanmark.dk, the rules on apostille and legalisation from Familieretshuset and the Hague Conference. We use the same data in our customer portal.
Does the table also apply to documents from a country other than the nationality?
What counts is the country that issued the document. If the marriage was dissolved in Germany, for example, the German decree needs no apostille, whatever your nationality.
