Yes, you can get married in Dragør without Danish residence, and in English: the municipality states explicitly on its page that the ceremony is held in English. Weddings take place at the town hall on selected days each month and on selected Saturdays. Dragør is on the island of Amager, right next to Copenhagen Airport; you only book a date once your approval from Familieretshuset has arrived.
Can couples from abroad get married in Dragør?
Yes. The municipality's page has a separate English section, “International weddings”, for couples from abroad. It says: before you can marry in Denmark, you need an approval to marry (Danish: prøvelsesattest). It certifies that you meet the requirements of the Danish Marriage Act. If one of you is neither Danish nor a citizen of another Nordic country and has no permanent right of residence in Denmark, it is issued by Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law.
The rest of the page, in Danish, is aimed at couples who live in Denmark: they apply with a digital marriage declaration (Ægteskabserklæring), which both partners sign with MitID. This route does not apply to you. In your application to Familieretshuset you name Dragør as the place of the wedding, because the approval is only valid for one municipality. The fee is DKK 2,100 (about €281) and is not refunded. The approval is valid for four months from issue, or less if a passport, visa or residence permit expires earlier. Familieretshuset usually decides complete applications within 5 working days; if it asks for more documents, it is working on cases received in August 2026 in that queue, as of 6 November 2026. Which documents you need is shown in our guide Documents for your wedding in Denmark.
When does Dragør hold weddings?
Dragør does not name fixed weekdays. According to the municipality's page (last updated on 15 October 2026), the following applies to weddings at the town hall:
| Period | Weddings at the town hall |
|---|---|
| Selected days each month | between 10:30 and 16:30 |
| Selected Saturdays | yes, the municipality does not state a time |
| Public holidays and 1 May | usually no weddings |
| Summer holidays, weeks 27 to 32 | no weddings |
| Between Christmas and New Year | no weddings |
You arrange which days of the month these are directly with the mayor's office (Borgmestersekretariatet). If you bring your own witnesses, the municipality says it can be more flexible about times in some cases. Dragør does not say how long the ceremony lasts, in which room it takes place or how many guests there is room for; but the municipality does ask in advance how many guests you are bringing.
The summer break lasts six weeks. Your approval is valid for four months; if the summer break or the Christmas period falls within that window, there are correspondingly fewer wedding days in Dragør. Which time of year suits a wedding in Denmark is shown in our guide When to marry in Denmark.
Ceremony in English: what it means for you
In the English section Dragør writes: “The ceremony is conducted in English.” For couples who both understand English, that makes things simple. The municipality does not say whether it also holds ceremonies in German; do not assume so. In Denmark you must both understand what is said during the ceremony. If one of you does not understand English, bring an interpreter and let the municipality know in advance. More in our guide Interpreters at the wedding. According to the municipality, the ceremony is conducted by the mayor or by a person the mayor has authorised to do so.
Witnesses: from the municipality on weekdays, your own on Saturdays
Every wedding needs two witnesses. If you bring guests, they can be your witnesses. If you cannot bring any guests, the town hall provides two witnesses according to the English section; the Danish part of the page adds that this does not apply on Saturdays or to weddings outside the town hall. So if you are travelling as a couple on your own, a weekday at the town hall is the option for you. Bringing your own witnesses can be worthwhile, because according to the municipality it is then sometimes more flexible about times. When other municipalities provide witnesses is compared in our guide Wedding witnesses in Denmark.
How to get a date in Dragør
- Ask before you apply. Write to dragoer@dragoer.dk saying in which period you would like to marry, and ask whether Dragør holds weddings in that period. You cannot book yet at this stage.
- Apply for the approval for Dragør. To Familieretshuset, with Dragør as the place of the wedding. Both partners fill in their part of the application, within 14 days of starting it; otherwise Familieretshuset closes the case according to its own page, and you have to apply and pay again. Whether your case has any special features is shown by the free eligibility check.
- Book the date by e-mail. As soon as you have the approval, write to dragoer@dragoer.dk again. Give several possible days, say whether you are bringing your own witnesses and how many guests are coming. The municipality also asks whether you will exchange rings and whether you have any special wishes for the ceremony. By phone you can reach the mayor's office on +45 32 89 01 00.
- Wait for confirmation. It is best to book flights and accommodation firmly only once the municipality has confirmed the date and time.
- The wedding day. The town hall is at Kirkevej 7 in Dragør. A wedding in Denmark usually takes 15 to 20 minutes; afterwards you usually receive the international marriage certificate.
How the wedding day works is explained in our guide The wedding ceremony in Denmark, step by step. In the Complete package we file the application with Dragør as the place of the wedding and arrange the date with the municipality; the prices are on the prices page. We are often in contact with municipalities and ask them, but nobody can promise a particular day. What you can do if you have the approval but no date is explained in our guide Approved but no wedding date; we handle the switch to another municipality as a change of municipality.
Weddings in the open air, at home or at your celebration
Dragør does not only hold weddings at the town hall. According to the municipality's page, you can also marry in the open air or have a registrar marry you at your wedding party. The mayor and other members of the municipal council can conduct weddings outside the town hall, for example at your home or “at a beautiful place in Dragør”. You discuss your wishes for this with the municipality by phone or e-mail.
- Witnesses: outside the town hall you always bring two of your own.
- Costs: the municipality names no price; get any possible charge confirmed in writing beforehand.
- Permission: Dragør does not say whether you need separate permission for a public place, for example at the harbour or on the beach; ask about it in your enquiry.
- Summer break: according to the municipality, in the weeks when no weddings are held at the town hall, a wedding at home or at a place in Dragør may be possible. For summer 2026, the request for this had to arrive before the break began.
Which places other municipalities offer and what that costs is compared in our guide Special places to get married in Denmark; municipalities with Saturday and beach weddings are shown in our guide Saturday or beach weddings in Denmark.

|---|---|

Dragør, Copenhagen or Roskilde?
Dragør is on Amager, not far from central Copenhagen, but it is a municipality of its own with its own rules. An approval for Copenhagen is not valid in Dragør. According to the municipalities' pages (Dragør, Roskilde and Copenhagen as of 6 November 2026, Frederiksberg and Stevns as of 3 November 2026):
| Municipality | Wedding days | Witnesses provided by the municipality | Language according to the municipality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragør | selected days each month 10:30 to 16:30, selected Saturdays | two on weekdays, none on Saturdays | English |
| Copenhagen | Mon to Fri 9:10 to 15:50, Sat 10:00 to 12:40 | always two | Danish, English or German |
| Frederiksberg | Thu, Fri, Sat, each at 11:00 | two on weekdays, one on Saturdays | without Danish residence, English or German on Thursdays only |
| Roskilde | Thu 15:30, Fri 11:30, Sat 11:00 | only if arranged in advance | not stated |
| Stevns | Tue and Thu 10:00 to 14:00, selected Saturdays | on request on Thursdays and on the first Saturday of the month | not stated |
Dragør suits couples who both understand English and are flexible about the day and time. If you want to marry in German, you will find rules that suit you better in Copenhagen; Frederiksberg marries couples without Danish residence in English or German only on Thursdays. Getting to Dragør
Dragør is in the south-east of the island of Amager, right next to Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup). Dragør has no railway station or metro station.
- From the airport: by bus or taxi; it is a short trip.
- From Copenhagen Central Station: by train or metro to the airport and from there on by bus, or by taxi.
- By car from Germany: via Jutland and the Great Belt bridge, or by ferry from Puttgarden to Rødby or from Rostock to Gedser, then towards Copenhagen and Amager.
- From Switzerland and Austria: fly to Copenhagen.
Current bus connections are shown by the Danish journey planner Rejseplanen. Because the airport is so close, arriving on the wedding day itself would be possible; we still recommend arriving the day before, because a flight delay is hard to make up for on the wedding day.
Dragør after the ceremony
Dragør is an old harbour town on the Øresund. For photos and a walk after the ceremony, good options are:
- The old town: houses painted yellow and white, thatched roofs and cobblestones, as in the picture above.
- The harbour: with fishing and sailing boats and a view across the Øresund.
- The coast: paths along the water for a quiet walk, just the two of you or with your guests.
How to get a wedding date in Denmark and what rules other municipalities have is explained on our page How to get a wedding date in Denmark. Municipalities sometimes change wedding days and rules at short notice; what counts is what the municipality confirms to you.
