Getting married in Ringkøbing-Skjern, the municipality on Ringkøbing Fjord on Jutland's North Sea coast: it has its own pages in English and German for couples from abroad. Ceremonies take place at Ringkøbing town hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the early afternoon. The day before is what matters: by then at the latest you must both appear at Borgerservice (the municipality's citizen service) and show ID.
Does Ringkøbing-Skjern marry couples from abroad?
Yes. The municipality has its own pages for this. Under the titles “Marriage for couples from abroad” (English page) and “Eheschließungen für ausländische Paare in Dänemark” (German page) it explains the route. If you are both Danish or Nordic citizens or both have a permanent right of residence in Denmark, you apply to the municipality. If that does not apply to both of you, you apply for the approval, the prøvelsesattest (certificate of marital status), to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law.
Once you have a date with the municipality, according to its pages it receives the approval and the necessary documents directly from Familieretshuset. It does not name residence in Denmark as a condition. What the agency wants to see for the application is explained in our guides Prøvelsesattest and Documents for your wedding in Denmark.
Wedding days and venue: Tuesdays and Thursdays at the town hall
According to the pages for couples from abroad, as of 6 November 2026:
| Item | Ringkøbing-Skjern |
|---|---|
| Venue | Ringkøbing town hall |
| Wedding days | Tuesday and Thursday, between 13:30 and 15:00 on both days |
| Witnesses from the municipality | yes, if you bring none of your own |
| ID check | both in person, the day before the wedding at the latest, Borgerservice, Ved Fjorden 6, 6950 Ringkøbing |
| Arranging the date | by email to post@rksk.dk or by phone on 99 74 15 72 or 99 74 14 79 |
| Rice | banned inside and outside the town hall; birdseed is welcome |
The Danish page for residents also lists Saturdays, with different times in two places, and on Saturdays only with your own witnesses. The pages for couples from abroad list only Tuesday and Thursday. So plan with these two days and clarify anything else directly with the municipality.
The day before: ID check at Borgerservice
This rule sets Ringkøbing-Skjern apart from municipalities without prior registration: by the day before the wedding at the latest, you must both appear at Borgerservice in Ringkøbing, Ved Fjorden 6, and show ID. At this appointment the municipality also needs:
- the names and addresses of your two witnesses, if you bring your own,
- the number of people coming to the wedding.
Bring the passports you submitted to Familieretshuset and, if needed, your visa or residence permit. How to prove your lawful stay since the EES is explained in our guide EES proof for the wedding.
According to its page, the municipality's administration can be reached on Mondays from 10:00 to 17:00 and Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:30; for a personal visit to Borgerservice it generally asks you to make an appointment first (Åbnings- og telefontider). It is closed on public holidays, on the Friday after Ascension Day, on Constitution Day and on the working days between Christmas and New Year. So when you arrange the date, clarify straight away when you will come for the ID check.
Witnesses and language
Two witnesses must be present at the ceremony. If you bring none of your own, the municipality provides them. Your own witnesses may be friends or relatives; you give their names and addresses at the ID check. When municipalities provide witnesses and when they do not is compared in our guide Witnesses in Denmark.
Ringkøbing-Skjern names no ceremony language on any of its three pages. The fact that there is a German page does not automatically mean that ceremonies are held in German. When you request a date, ask whether English or German is possible. If one of you does not understand the ceremony language, you need an interpreter; what applies is explained in our guide Interpreters at the wedding.
Weddings in nature, in a garden or at home
The municipality promotes itself with the name “Naturens Rige”, the realm of nature, and on its Danish page (Vielse) it also offers weddings outside the town hall, if the ceremony can be arranged at the desired place and time. As examples it names:
- in nature,
- in private gardens,
- at private addresses and similar places.
Clear conditions apply: the municipality and the registrar only take care of the ceremony itself, and you see to everything else. That includes at least two witnesses of your own. If the wedding is to take place in a public place, for example in a park, you obtain any necessary permits yourselves and follow the rules of the place.
The municipality names no days, times or costs for a wedding outside the town hall, and this section appears only on the Danish page, with no reference to couples from abroad. It does not name a beach explicitly. So ask by email before you apply whether a wedding in nature is possible with an approval from Familieretshuset and what it costs. The Danish page also mentions one special feature: registrars from other Danish municipalities may conduct weddings in Ringkøbing-Skjern in nature, in gardens or at private addresses without prior permission, but not at the town hall.
Which municipalities explicitly offer couples from abroad a beach, a garden or a boat, and what that costs, is compared in our guide Special places to get married. When the weather on the west coast is likely to play along is covered in our guide Best time of year to get married in Denmark.
How it works: from the application to saying “I do”
Write to the municipality
Write to post@rksk.dk saying on which Tuesday or Thursday you would like to marry. Ask from what point the municipality fixes a date, which language is possible and when you should come for the ID check. The municipality does not publish how long you wait for a date; we are often in touch with municipalities and ask on behalf of our couples.
Application to Familieretshuset
You apply for the prøvelsesattest and name Ringkøbing-Skjern as the municipality. You pay the fee of DKK 2,100 (about €281) when you submit; it is not refunded (Familieretshuset). The agency usually decides complete applications within 5 working days. If it asks for more documents, the case joins a queue: as of 6 November 2026 it is working on such cases received in August 2026 (processing times).
The approval goes to the municipality
Familieretshuset sends the approval and documents to Ringkøbing-Skjern. The approval is valid for 4 months from issue, shorter if a non-European passport or a residence permit expires earlier. Your wedding day must fall within this window.
Arrival and ID check
By the day before the wedding at the latest, you are both at Borgerservice in Ringkøbing, with your passports and, if applicable, the names and addresses of your witnesses.
The ceremony
On a Tuesday or Thursday between 13:30 and 15:00 at the town hall. Straight afterwards you receive two international marriage certificates in five languages; what they are worth at home is explained in our guide International marriage certificate.
Which documents your case needs is shown by our free eligibility check. How a Danish ceremony generally works is described in our guide The wedding ceremony in Denmark.
What does a wedding in Ringkøbing-Skjern cost?
The municipality states no fee for the town hall ceremony. Since August 2025, Danish municipalities generally no longer charge for this, after the City of Copenhagen found no legal basis for it in its own legal review. For a venue outside the town hall a municipality may charge the costs involved; Ringkøbing-Skjern states no amount for this.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Familieretshuset fee (mandatory) | DKK 2,100 (about €281), not refundable |
| Ceremony at the town hall | no fee stated |
| Wedding in nature or in a garden | no amount stated, ask beforehand |
| Overnight stay because of the ID check the day before | plan at least one night |
In the Essential package (€249.99) you pay Familieretshuset's fee yourselves; in the Complete package (€649.99) it is included. Everything else is on our prices page and in our cost comparison 2026.
Getting to the west coast
By car: Ringkøbing is in western Jutland on Ringkøbing Fjord. From Hamburg it is about 390 km by road, from the border at Padborg about 225 km. From Copenhagen you drive about 350 km via the toll bridge across the Great Belt (Storebælt).
By train: Ringkøbing has a station on the West Jutland line between Esbjerg and Struer. From Hamburg or Copenhagen you change at least once; journey times are shown by Rejseplanen and Deutsche Bahn.
By plane: The nearest airport is Billund, about 80 km by road south-east of Ringkøbing. From Copenhagen Airport you continue across the country by car or train.
Because of the ID check, you arrive by the day before the wedding at the latest, and early enough to reach Borgerservice at the agreed time.
Ringkøbing and the west coast as a short trip
- Ringkøbing: The small old town around the market square, Torvet, with the old town hall and the pedestrian zone is close to the fjord harbour.
- Holmsland Klit: This narrow strip of dunes separates Ringkøbing Fjord from the North Sea (Vesterhavet). Along it lie the villages of Søndervig and Hvide Sande and the Lyngvig Fyr lighthouse. The municipality does not name these beaches as wedding venues, but they make a good outing for the day after.
- Skjern Å: The river delta at the south-eastern end of the fjord is a large nature area with meadows and waterbirds.

If your approval is already with another municipality and there is no suitable date there, only Familieretshuset can forward it to Ringkøbing-Skjern; it stays valid for 4 months from issue. We take care of this step as a change of municipality; more on it in our guide Approved but no date. The municipality sometimes changes wedding days and rules at short notice, so check its current page before you apply.
