Yes, couples without Danish residence can get married on Fanø too. At the town hall in Nordby the municipality holds weddings on the third Saturday of every month, free of charge and with its own witnesses if you wish. If you would rather marry on the beach, at the old Navigation School or at a place of your own, you bring two witnesses and pay for the time spent.
Can couples without Danish residence get married on Fanø?
Yes. Fanø Municipality has its own pages in German and English with a section on international marriages. They state what applies everywhere in Denmark: if one of you is not a Danish or Nordic citizen or does not have permanent residence in Denmark, you apply for the approval to marry (Danish: prøvelsesattest) to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law.
Important for Fanø: the island is a municipality of its own and is not part of Esbjerg. The approval is valid for the municipality you name in your application. So enter Fanø if you want to marry on the island. Only Familieretshuset can change the place of the wedding later, not the municipality. If you would rather marry on the mainland, the rules are in our guide Getting married in Esbjerg and Ribe.
Familieretshuset usually decides complete applications within 5 working days. If it asks for more documents, it takes much longer: as of 03.11.2026 it is working on cases from August 2026 in that queue. The fee is DKK 2,100 (about €281) and is not refunded. Which documents you need is shown in our guide Documents for your wedding in Denmark.
Town hall, Navigation School or a place of your own
Fanø offers three kinds of weddings. They differ in days, witnesses and costs (according to the municipality's pages, as of 03.11.2026):
| Venue | When | Witnesses | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Town hall in Nordby, council chamber or courtyard | third Saturday of every month | provided by the municipality on request | no fee |
| Old Navigation School, Nordby | scheduled continuously based on demand | two of your own | by time spent, estimated DKK 350 |
| Beach or a place of your choice | by arrangement | two of your own | by time spent, estimated DKK 350 to 700 |
At the town hall: council chamber or courtyard
At Fanø Town Hall in Nordby (Skolevej 5) you marry in the council chamber or, weather permitting, in the courtyard. Weddings take place there on the third Saturday of every month, and on those days the ceremony at the town hall costs nothing. If you wish, the municipality provides the two witnesses.
Think about what this rhythm means: your approval is valid for four months from issue, or less if a passport, visa or residence permit expires earlier. Only about four third Saturdays fall into that window. So time your application so that the approval is not issued months before the Saturday you want.
At the old Navigation School
The old Navigation School in Nordby is where sailors used to be trained. The municipality schedules dates there continuously based on demand, and you bring two witnesses of your own. You may raise a glass after the ceremony: you bring glasses and drinks yourselves and clean up afterwards. There are a few steps at the entrance and inside; the municipality mentions a wheelchair ramp and a second entrance. The building shares its car park with the medical centre, and there is more parking at the nearby ferry terminal.
On the beach or at a place of your own
For the official part, the registrar (Danish: giftefoged) also comes to you. The municipality names as examples the beach at Fanø Bad, Rindby Strand, Søfartsbroen, Børsen in Sønderho, Kikkebjerg, a holiday home or a place on Fanø that you choose. Your own home is only possible if you have an address on Fanø. Here, too, you bring two witnesses of your own.
The municipality itself recommends a plan B: the weather on Fanø can be harsh, so keep a backup venue that is sheltered from wind and rain. Which other municipalities hold weddings on the beach or on Saturdays is compared in our guide Saturday or beach weddings in Denmark; more places are shown in Special places to get married in Denmark.
How much does a wedding on Fanø cost?
At the town hall you pay nothing on the Saturdays mentioned. For weddings outside the town hall the municipality charges an extra fee based on the actual time spent, per started hour. Its estimate per place:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Familieretshuset fee (mandatory, not refundable) | DKK 2,100 (about €281) |
| Wedding at the town hall on the third Saturday | no fee |
| Wedding outside, Nordby (including the Navigation School) | estimated DKK 350 (about €47) |
| Wedding outside, Fanø Bad or Rindby | estimated DKK 700 (about €94) |
| Wedding outside, Sønderho | estimated DKK 700 (about €94) |
You transfer the fee to the municipality's account before the wedding, as agreed with the wedding office. Add the ferry, travel and accommodation. All the costs of a wedding in Denmark are listed in our cost comparison 2026, and our fixed prices are on the prices page.
Language, witnesses and the ceremony
According to the municipality's Danish page, the ceremony is held in Danish, German or English. You must both understand what is said; if one of you does not understand any of the three languages, you need an interpreter. More in our guide Interpreters at the wedding.
Two witnesses are mandatory in Denmark. At the town hall Fanø provides them on request; at all other places you bring two of your own. When other municipalities provide witnesses is compared in our guide Wedding witnesses in Denmark.
The ceremony itself is short; Fanø says it typically takes 10 to 15 minutes:
- You arrive with your guests and witnesses at the agreed time. If you would like to say a few words or include music, tell the registrar when you arrive; it is not required.
- The registrar gives the municipality's wedding speech and reads the official marriage ritual.
- You say yes, followed by the exchange of rings if you wish.
- You, the witnesses and the registrar sign, and you receive your marriage certificate. Then there is time for photos.
How the whole day in Denmark works, from arrival to certificate, is explained in our guide The wedding ceremony in Denmark, step by step.
How to plan your wedding on Fanø
- Choose the venue and time frame. Town hall on the third Saturday, Navigation School or a place of your own: this decides whether you need your own witnesses and what it costs.
- Apply for an approval for Fanø. To Familieretshuset, with Fanø as the place of the wedding. It is valid for four months from issue.
- Agree the date with the municipality. The wedding office at the town hall is responsible: by e-mail to vielse@fanoe.dk or by phone on +45 76 66 06 60 (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00). The date is binding once the municipality confirms it.
- Before you travel. For weddings outside the town hall you transfer the agreed amount beforehand. Bring your passports to the ceremony.
Whether your case has any special features is shown by the free eligibility check. In the Complete package we check your documents before they are submitted, file the application with Fanø as the place of the wedding and arrange the date with the municipality. We are often in contact with municipalities and ask them; but nobody can promise a particular Saturday, and what counts is the municipality's confirmation.
Getting there: the ferry from Esbjerg
Fanø lies off Esbjerg in the Wadden Sea. The FanøLinjen ferry, operated by the shipping company Molslinjen, runs from Esbjerg harbour (Dokvej 5) to Nordby. According to the municipality the crossing takes 12 minutes, and during the day there are usually three departures per hour. You buy tickets online or at the machines at the terminal, and they are always return tickets. FanøLinjen publishes the current timetable. You can park at the harbours in Esbjerg and Nordby; according to FanøLinjen, parking on Fanø is free.
- From Germany by car: via the A7 and the Danish E45 to Kolding, then on the E20 to Esbjerg, or along the west coast via Tønder and Ribe. You take the car on the ferry.
- By train: to Esbjerg, from Germany with a change; the DB or DSB journey planner shows the connection. From the harbour you walk onto the ferry.
- From Switzerland and Austria: by car through Germany, or by plane, for example to Billund or Hamburg, and on from there by rental car or train.
Because town hall weddings take place on Saturdays, it is best to plan an overnight stay on the island or in Esbjerg. If you would rather marry near the border without a ferry, you will find alternatives in our guide Getting married near the border in Denmark.
Why couples like Fanø and what you will see
The municipality highlights the island setting: the Wadden Sea around Fanø is a UNESCO World Heritage site. VisitFanø, the local tourism association, mentions about 15 kilometres of beach, dunes and seals lying on the sandbanks; with a little luck you will find amber on the beach. Good spots for photos after the wedding:
- Nordby: old skippers' houses, maritime history and two museums, the Skibsfarts- og Dragtsamling and the Fanø Museum.
- Sønderho: the village in the south of the island with houses from the 18th and 19th centuries; Børsen, one of the wedding venues, is here too.
- The west coast: the wide beach at Fanø Bad and Rindby Strand, both named by the municipality as wedding venues.
How to get a wedding date in Denmark and what rules the municipalities have is explained on our page How to get a wedding date in Denmark; how long you wait in popular municipalities is shown in the waiting times comparison 2026. Municipalities sometimes change their rules at short notice; what counts is what the municipality confirms.
