The express wedding, arrive today, married tomorrow, has not existed in Denmark since 2019. From complete documents to the ceremony, 3–6 weeks is possible in 2026 if you are flexible about the municipality; in popular places it takes longer. Even so, it is often far faster than in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
Why the same-day express wedding no longer exists
Until the end of 2018, each Danish municipality checked for itself whether a couple could marry. Some registry offices were so uncomplicated that couples really could arrive with their passports and marry shortly afterwards, hence Denmark's reputation as the "Las Vegas of Europe". The reform of 1 January 2019 centralised this check for couples with a foreign connection, first at the Danish State Administration (Statsforvaltningen) and, since 1 April 2019, at the Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset, AFL). It verifies both partners' capacity to marry before any ceremony date can be booked.
In practice this means: you first submit an application with all documents to the AFL and pay the fee of DKK 2,100 (about €281). Only once the AFL agrees does it issue the approval (Prøvelsesattest); it goes to the municipality named in your application. Only then is the ceremony date arranged. A wedding on the day of arrival without prior review is therefore legally impossible, for every provider, without exception.
The realistic 2026 timeline
The good news: in 2026 the procedure is faster than ever, if the application is complete. As of October 2026, the AFL usually processes complete applications within 5 working days. But if something is missing and the authority has to request it, your case slips into the backlog: as of 18 October 2026 the AFL is working on backlog cases received in August 2026, a delay of around 2 months.

The real bottleneck: the municipality appointment
Since the AFL review takes only days for clean applications, the choice of registry office is now what mainly decides how fast you actually get married:
- Tønder holds ceremonies for couples not resident in Denmark on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The online calendar releases new ceremony days exactly 60 days ahead, and they are usually gone within one or two days. So for Tønder, plan a good two months from the approval. Booking is only possible via the online system, and you receive the link with the AFL approval letter; the registry office is closed in high summer (calendar weeks 30–31) and from 24 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. - Aabenraa is also close to the border and releases dates exactly 60 days ahead. If you want to marry there, book the moment a new day opens; for questions, the municipality can currently only be reached by email. More in our guide Getting married in Aabenraa.
- Ærø, the popular island, offers a date within 10 weeks of the approval (according to the municipality's Danish page, October 2026); you request it by email at info@weddinginfo.dk.
- Copenhagen states a waiting time of up to 4 months; since 24 October 2025, 40 % of its times have been reserved for couples in which at least one partner lives in Copenhagen. Couples without a Danish CPR number must show their original documents in person at City Hall there, at the earliest 5 and at the latest 1 working day before the wedding; for a Monday or Saturday wedding, by the Friday before at the latest.
And the clock is ticking: the Prøvelsesattest is valid for exactly 4 months. With long waiting times it can get tight; the 60-day release in Tønder and Aabenraa, on the other hand, fits into this window. If the municipality in your application has no dates left, only Familieretshuset can forward the approval to another municipality; we take care of this as a change of municipality (€99.99, included once in Complete). What actually speeds things up: complete documents on the first try
There is no official express processing at the AFL. The biggest lever for a fast wedding is therefore not an "express service" but an application that goes through on the first attempt. If you apply yourselves, each of you fills in your own part: if the second part has not been received 14 days after the start, the AFL closes the case, and you apply and pay again.
This is exactly where most delays arise: divorce decrees without a certificate of finality, missing apostilles or translations, incomplete passport scans (the AFL wants colour photos of every page, including the blank ones) or, for partners from outside the EU, missing proof of lawful stay (since 10 April 2026 including a printout from the EES calculator and flight tickets). What documents from your country need is set out in the rules for your country of origin. A civil-status certificate proving you are single, by contrast, is only requested by the AFL in individual cases; applicants who have never been married confirm their marital status with their signature. Every request for additional documents currently costs you around 2 months (as of 18 October 2026), and the express wedding unintentionally becomes an autumn or winter wedding.
Good to know: you do not need to travel to Denmark for the procedure itself, the AFL application and all documents are submitted digitally. You only need to be there for the ceremony; 1–2 days on site are enough. Credibility check: how to spot unrealistic promises
The term "express wedding" is still used in many providers' marketing, even though it no longer describes today's procedure. Check offers against these points:
Same-day or 24-hour promises
Legally impossible since 2019, the AFL review always comes before the ceremony date.
A "guaranteed dream date" without a Prøvelsesattest
Municipalities like Tønder only assign dates after AFL approval. Nobody can bindingly promise you a date beforehand.
"No documents needed"
The AFL always requires evidence: passport scans and more depending on your case, such as the divorce decree after an earlier marriage or proof of lawful stay for partners from outside the EU. Anyone playing this down risks sending you into the document-request loop.
Blanket success guarantees without looking at your case
Whether divorce, third-country certificates or visa questions: any guarantee without reviewing your situation is not serious.

Always ask whether the AFL fee of DKK 2,100 (about €281) is included in the price or added on top.
No word about waiting times
Anyone promising you a fixed date "next week" is ignoring that Tønder and Aabenraa only release dates 60 days ahead and Copenhagen states a waiting time of up to 4 months.
Fast, yes; instant, no
The express wedding in the literal sense is history, but Denmark remains one of the fastest reputable routes to a civil marriage in Europe, especially compared with Germany, where the higher regional court exemption alone can take months: no certificate of no impediment, a lean document list, and an AFL review in days rather than months, provided the paperwork is right.
And fast doesn't mean expensive: the town-hall ceremony has been free of charge since August 2025, every couple pays the AFL fee of DKK 2,100 (about €281) on any route, and Tønder is about 2.5 hours by car from Hamburg.
